Great things are happening to train teachers and provide additional learning opportunities for students!
An update on the great work that is being provided through the district’s Academic Services department was provided at the October 27 board meeting. Regular updates are shared with the board and community to keep them informed.
In spring 2023, the Minnesota Legislature approved the Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act, also known as the READ Act. The purpose of the legislation is to have every student reading at or above grade level every year. The act also emphasizes support for multilingual learners and students receiving special education services in achieving individualized reading goals.
New Prague Area Schools has been preparing its teachers to implement the learning strategies included in the READ Act. During the 2024-2025 school year, 100% of the district’s K-5 and K-12 special education teachers and early learning staff members completed the READ Act training. During the 2025-2026 school year, all K-5 paraprofessionals will complete a shortened version of the training. Teachers in grades 6-12 will participate in the training during the 2026-2027 school year.
“We are very excited about the participation of our teachers in this training,” said Maren Bahler, director of academic services. “Our teachers, paraprofessionals and other staff members will learn skills and strategies that will help them individualize instruction and focus on the reading needs for each student.”
There is also training being provided to K-5, secondary math and special education teachers on math practices and concepts. The training, offered at no cost to the district by the South Central Services Cooperative, is helping our teachers improve instruction and increase rigor in math for students.
